A BMW E90 angel eye bulb replacement is a straightforward repair that can save an expensive trip to the dealership.

There is a lot of confusion as to exactly what BMW E90 angel eye bulbs are. According to the BMW iDrive display, they are known as the parking/daytime running lights. But to most BMW owners, they are simply known as angel eyes; those distinctive lit rings around the high and low beam lamps that stay on even in sunlight. Angel eye "halo" lights are used as daytime running lights and to enhance the cosmetic looks of the front end of the vehicle.
Further confusing the matter is BMW used several different styles of angel eye bulbs in the E9x 3 series depending on the year, model and whether the vehicle had xenon and adaptive lighting options. Most auto parts sites are not very clear as to which angel eye bulb fits the model and year vehicle being searched for, often leaving owners purchasing the wrong lamp.
This article is exclusively for all BMW E90 sedans and E91 touring wagons built from 2009-2013 that have the xenon and adaptive headlight option. These particular vehicles use a simple H8 halogen bulb located in the back of the headlight assembly to light the angel eyes. If you are not sure if your 3 series has xenon headlights, simply look inside the engine compartment at the interior side of the headlight assembly. All BMW E90s with the optional xenon headlight bulbs will have a control unit that is easily visible (see following image).
A BMW E90 angel eye bulb replacement has an inaccurate reputation of being difficult; the bulb must be removed from the back of the headlight within a very confined space. The procedure is actually quite simple...we give you two options for replacing the bulb that will make the process go much more smoothly in our detailed step-by-step instructions below.

Section 1 - Removing and installing the angel eye bulbs (Option 1 - from engine comparttment)
As discussed at the beginning of this article, the BMW E90 angel eye bulbs are notoriously difficult to replace because of the limited space behind the headlight assembly. Option 1 is to quickly disconnect the power steering and coolant reservoirs and gently push them to the side...this will give you plenty of room to easily remove and install the bulbs from the engine compartment. You can also get great access from the fender well if you prefer that method (see Section 2 below). Either method is acceptable and is based on your personal preference.
  1. Note the location of the angel eye bulbs. They are accessed from the rear of the headlight assembly.bmw e90 angel eye bulb replacement - Locate the angel eye bulb locations
  2. To avoid scraped hands and screaming expletives, we highly recommend loosening the power steering reservoir and/or coolant expansion tank before attempting to remove the bulbs. It only takes a couple of minutes...they are both simply held in place with two 10mm bolts (or nuts on some models).bmw e90 angel eye bulb replacement - Remove the two nuts anchoring the power steering reservoir Gently push the power steering reservoir out of the way bmw e90 angel eye bulb replacement - Remove the two bolts anchoring the coolant expansion tank Gently move the coolant expansion tank to the side
  3. You can now easily access the BMW E90 angel eye bulbs in the rear of the headlight. Remove the bulb's covering cap by turning it counter-clockwise.bmw e90 angel eye bulb replacement - You now have clear access to the angel eye covering cap Turn the covering cap counterclockwise to remove bmw e90 angel eye bulb replacement - Remove the covering cap from the angel eye bulb
  4. The angel eye H8 halogen bulb is now visible.bmw e90 angel eye bulb replacement - The H8 halogen light is now visible
  5. Use a pair of long nose pliers (they are easier than your fingers) to turn the bulb counter-clockwise until it releases. 6. Remove the bulb from the socket.bmw e90 angel eye bulb replacement - Remove the bulb from the socket
  7. Install a new H8 bulb following the above instructions in reverse. DO NOT touch the new bulb with your bare hands...the oil from your skin can cause the bulb to overheat and severely limit its lifespan.
Section 2 - Removing and installing the angel eye bulbs (Option 2 - from fender well)
If you do not want to remove the angel eye bulbs from the engine compartment, or if you are replacing other headlight bulbs like the xenon and/or fog light lamps during this repair where the fender liner must be removed, then your second option is to replace the angel eye bulb from the fender well. As we have previously stated, either option is an acceptable procedure for changing the angel eye bulb...it is purely personal preference.
  1. Turn the front wheel all the way out on the side of the car you are replacing the xenon lamp on. This will allow you enough space to remove the front fender liner.bmw e90 angel eye bulb replacement - Rotate front wheels out on side of vehicle you are working on so fender liner can be accessed.
  2. There are seven 8mm screws, two 7mm screws and one plastic nut attaching the front fender liner to the body of the vehicle. Use a socket wrench and/or nut driver to remove all of the screws.Remove the 10mm plastic nut securing the front fender liner. bmw e90 angel eye bulb replacement - Remove the seven 8mm screws securing the fender liner bmw e90 angel eye bulb replacement - Remove the two 7mm screws securing the bottom of the fender liner
  3. Grasp the front fender liner and remove it from the vehicle. The fender liner should come out easily...if it doesn't then you may have missed a fastener.Remove the fender liner from the vehicle
  4. The angel eye bulb can now be easily accessed from the rear of the headlight. bmw e90 angel eye bulb replacement - The angel eye bulb can now be easily accessed from the fender well.
  5. Follow the instructions in Section 1 for replacing the angel eye H8 bulb.
